Yas Marina Circuit
The Yas Marina Circuit, located on the island of the same name 30 km from Abu Dhabi city, is one of the world's most modern tracks. Designed by specialist Hermann Tilke, it is packed with futuristic solutions, some of which are entirely new, such as the pit lane exit, a tunnel that passes under the track, or the run-off area on the outside of turn 7, which is wedged under the grandstand.
Along with this come some impressive facilities: The pit lane contains 40 pits, while the track has a lighting system for night racing.
Opened in October 2009, the track extends over 5.55 km in its longest configuration: there are 21 turns, nine right and 12 left. The first sector, consisting of turns 1, 2 and 3, is a fast 'complex' that must be tackled at the right pace. In the final part, the most challenging turns are 15 and 16, two fast right bends along the outer wall that runs beside the track.
Although the return straight is over one kilometre long (1178 metres), the track's layout favours a medium-high load aerodynamic setup, due to the numerous corners with a limited radius. For the same reason, it is important to drive the perfect line when entering the turns.
Another peculiarity of the circuit is that it can be divided into two tracks, respectively of 3.1 and 2.4 km, which can be used simultaneously to host two different events.
